Students on the autism spectrum often present with difficulty regulating their feelings and interacting socially. This workshop describes how to handle meltdowns and design effective behavior plans to prevent these moments and reduce frustration and anxiety. The second part of the presentation details strategies to motivate students to learn, ways to teach social skills, how to generalize skills into the natural setting and increase acceptance and tolerance from peers. Information will be imparted though lecture, interactive exercises, and video clips.

Learning objectives for participants:

  • To understand the reasons for social skill deficits and disruptive behaviors
  • To learn strategies to deal effectively with meltdowns and be able to put together an effective behavior plan to prevent frustrations
  • To understand how to put together a social skills training program in schools or at home
  • To learn ways to motivate verbal and non-verbal students to want to socialize
  • To learn ways to motivate verbal and non-verbal students to want to socialize
  • To learn several strategies for teaching and generalizing skills
  • To learn how to create programs for typical peers to accept students with disabilities and model positive behaviors

Stress Management

Raising a child with a developmental disability can be one of the most stressful experiences a family goes through. Some common stressors include parental guilt, dealing with the perception of others, worry about the future, coping with difficult behaviors, disagreement between parents, increased financial burden and finding competent professional services for your child. This workshop will be presented by Marianne Simon who is a Wildwood Psychologist and Mary Fornabia who is a Social Worker and the mother of a child with a developmental disability. They will provide parents with coping mechanisms to better manage stress and improve well being.

Ontario ARC's Cruisin' for a Cause

Ontario ARC will hold its 18th annual major fundraiser Cruisin’ for a Cause on Aug. 19 at Steamboat Landing in Canandaigua. The event will feature live entertainment by Nik and the Nice Guys and Caribbean Extravaganza, cruises on the Canandaigua Lady, a barbeque picnic, as well as a silent and live auction. In addition, Constellation Brands will provide complimentary wines.

Tickets are $60 each and proceeds benefit Ontario ARC’s Recreation Program, which provides fun recreational activities for people with developmental disabilities.
