Steppingstones of Technology Innovation for Children with Disabilities Application deadline is March 19, 2010. The Technology and Media Services for Individuals with Disabilities program is designed to improve results for children with disabilities by promoting the development, demonstration and use of technology; supporting classroom educational media services activities that are of educational value to children with disabilities; and providing support for captioning and video description that are appropriate for classroom settings. Eligible applicants include state educational agencies (SEAs); local educational agencies (LEAs); public charter schools that are LEAs under state law; private nonprofit organizations; Indian tribes or tribal organizations; and for-profit organizations. Autism Speaks Announces Baker Summer Camp Program Autism Speaks, the nation's largest autism science and advocacy organization, has announced the establishment of the Autism Speaks Baker Summer Camp Scholarship Program, which will provide eligible camps with funding to offer scholarships to campers with autism. The program, funded by Norma and Malcolm Baker, began in Southern California and will now expand to the national level. Camps providing a qualified summer camp program to individuals with autism are encouraged to apply for a Camp Scholarship Fund through the Autism Speaks Baker Summer Camp Scholarship Program. Applications will be accepted from now through March 1, 2010. Eligible camps will identify qualified campers who can demonstrate financial need and offer up to $5,000 in scholarship funds. Autism Speaks encourages families to contact their local camp organizations and ask them to submit an application. Camps should have a successful history of supporting individuals with autism. Preference will be given to camps that provide opportunities for inclusion with typically developing peers, as well as those located in underserved communities. Through the Looking Glass and its National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families are pleased to announce new scholarships specifically for high school seniors and college students who have parents with disabilities. A total of ten $1000 scholarships will be given out Fall 2010. These scholarships are part of Through the Looking Glass National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families. Please note that the 2010 awards have different application procedures than previous years. There are separate scholarship awards for high school seniors and for college students, and each has separate eligibility requirements:
All application materials must be postmarked by March 1, 2010. Individuals may submit only one application per award period. Selection criteria for all scholarships include academic performance, community activities and service, letter of recommendation and an essay describing the experience of growing up with a parent with a disability. VSA arts Announces 2010 Playwright Discovery Call for Scripts Deadline- April 15, 2010 VSA arts Announces 2010 Playwright Discovery Call for Scripts The VSA arts Playwright Discovery Program invites middle and high school students to take a closer look at the world around them, examine how disability affects their lives and the lives of others, and express their views through the art of playwriting. Young playwrights with and without disabilities are encouraged to submit a script. Playwrights may write from their own experience or about an experience in the life of another person or fictional character. Scripts can be comedies, dramas, or even musicals. Entries may be the work of an individual student or a collaboration by a group or class of students. The winning play will be professionally produced or staged at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and the winning playwright will receive $2,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C., to see his or her play performed. Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation Invites Nominations for Inclusion Champion Award The Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation works to help young people with physical, mental, or learning disabilities to lead full and productive lives. The MEAF Inclusion Champion Award honors individuals who have made significant efforts to promote the full inclusion of youth with disabilities in society. The focus of the efforts may include, but is not limited to, helping to create a culture of inclusion within an organization or community or developing innovative strategies for inclusive programming in school activities, after-school programs, community service, and leadership development.
The Inclusion Champion is selected each year by a panel of experts in the field, and is presented during the Criteria for selection include evidence that the nominee's efforts have changed attitudes, increased inclusion, made a measurable impact on the lives of young people with and without disabilities, and promoted sustainability of inclusion outcomes. The Fulbright program promotes communication and respect between the people of the United States and other countries around the world through mutual understanding. The Fulbright Program selects participants based on their academic merit and leadership potential, and will provide disability-related accommodations as needed. For more information, visit: www.dosomething.org/ Social Security Ticket to Work and Self-Sufficiency Program You are invited to submit a proposal in accordance with the requirements of the enclosed solicitation number SSA-RFP-09-0010G, "Employment Networks (EN) for the Ticket to Work and Self-Sufficiency Program." The Ticket to Work and Self-Sufficiency Program is the centerpiece of the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999. This program provides Social Security beneficiaries with disabilities more choices for receiving employment services. Under this program the Social Security Administration (SSA) is issuing Tickets to eligible beneficiaries who, in turn, may assign those Tickets to an Employment Network (EN) of their choice to obtain employment services, vocational rehabilitation services or other support services necessary to maximize their economic self-sufficiency through work opportunities. An EN shall be either an agency or instrumentality of a State (or political subdivision of the State) or a private entity that assumes responsibility for the coordination and delivery of employment, vocational rehabilitation or other support services to those beneficiaries who have assigned their Tickets to the EN. 3/11/09 - DDPC Meeting *Notice* Open Government and the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC). All DDPC meetings are held in Albany, NY unless otherwise noted. Under law, the New York State Developmental Disabilities Planning Council (DDPC) meetings and DDPC Standing Committee meetings are open meetings. If the public wants to attend, they can attend as observers. Participants may be asked to leave during breaks in the deliberations and when the meeting goes into executive session. A listing of DDPC meetings is available by contacting the DDPC directly or visiting the DDPC website at www.ddpc.state.ny.us. People First Language The DDPC strictly adheres to and encourages the use of people first language. However you may note that in some articles/stories appearing in the E-Bulletin the language used is not always entirely people first.
